Owney, the Mail-Pouch Pooch
[Price: $14.48] [Rate] [Comments (0)] [Date: 2009-11-18]
One rainy night in 1888, a stray dog wandered into the U.S. Post Office in Albany, New York. Workers found him the next morning asleep on a pile of mail pouches. The dog seemed to like the post office and the smell of the mailbags and the men’s wool uniforms. When no one came to claim him, they named him Owney and made him their pet. However, Owney’s loyalty and sense of adventure soon made it clear he wasn’t just an average mutt. Over the course of nine years, Owney guarded the mail—not only in Albany but on mail trains that traveled all over the United States. Accompanied by lively pen-and-watercolor illustrations, this is a delightful true story of a special dog whose faithful service earned him a trip around the world. Owney can be seen in the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum.

Project Runway - The Complete First Season
[Price: $29.89] [Rate] [Comments (0)] [Date: 2009-11-18]
Set in Manhattan's Fashion District and hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum, PROJECT RUNWAY distinguishes itself from other reality shows by actually concentrating on talent. While shows like THE APPRENTICE may claim to pick winners on the basis of merit, the decisions of who is eliminated often seem random, or ratings-driven at best. In contrast, PROJECT RUNWAY focuses on the art of fashion design, which requires each contestant to possess technical skills like sewing, draping, and pattern-making, as well as a mastery of design principles and an understanding of what sells. After a cast of aspiring designers is gathered in New York City, Klum and expert judges (including Michael Kors) send them on various design missions. Using the resources of their metropolitan surroundings, and slaving away at sewing machines at Parsons School of Design, each contestant does his or her best to create outfits ranging from evening gowns to Postal Service uniforms, all in an intensely competitive atmosphere. From the charming and outrageously effeminate Austin Scarlett (whose designs, like his name, suggest vintage films and womanly grace) to the witty Jay McCarroll and the bitchy Wendy Pepper, the runway is constantly filled with clashing personalities and diverse styles. For anyone with an interest in fashion design, the show is actually quite informative. And for anyone just looking to spend an hour being entertained, the series offers enough eccentric characters and drama-filled catfights to tickle any reality-show addict's fancy. This release contains every episode from the show's popular debut season.

U.S. Postal Strike / TIME Cover: March 30, 1970, Art Poster by TIME Magazine
[Price: $19.95] [Rate] [Comments (0)] [Date: 2010-04-05]
The most eagerly awaited event in the editorial cycle at TIME Magazine is always the selection of the cover. The best covers capture the zeitgeist of the week while surviving the judgment of history. As browsing this collection of TIME cover art prints shows, TIME is as good a record as any of who and what mattered over the past 80-plus years. And so when TIME captures a person, an event or a trend within its iconic red borders, the magazine is adding that extra dose of significance that no other publication can quite match. That is one reason why the original artwork for more than 800 TIME covers now resides in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. Thanks to an amazing roster of artists, photographers and graphic designers, from TIME's earliest charcoal drawings of cover subjects to its later black-and-white photography to the more recent paintings and stunning color photography, TIME covers have always been, sometimes quite literally, works of great art. And, while the times may change, the TIME cover, with its iconic red border, has never lost its power to immediately send the signal that this person or event or idea is important to our lives, that in some way history is being made before our eyes.
